If you only have one hand available, you can unlatch one side and lift toward the opposite side to release the tray, which is a nice feature when you just don't have a second hand available. ![]() Early on, they took a trip to the zoo, where the toddler had a traumatic experience: A goose ran at the little girl, scaring her. And the fact that it happens at such high rates in small children might explain why so many of their memories seem to disappear.įrankland has worked on neurogenesis for the past five years, and he's also watched his daughter age from 2 to 7. "We're convinced that neurogenesis is one of the major factors that leads to forgetting in both adults and infants," says Frankland. But when they were given drugs that reduced the new connections in the brain, the baby animals retained the memories at a much higher rate. As expected, the baby animals lost the memories. Frankland and his colleagues trained baby and adult animals in memory tasks, like learning to fear an area where they received small shocks, and tested them a few weeks later. This work led Frankland to look at infancy, when neurogenesis happens at much higher rates than adulthood (a human infant's brain generates 2,100 to 2,800 new neurons each day compared with about 700 for adults). Frankland explains it this way: If a system suddenly adds a bunch of new connections and complexity, the entire setup may go sideways for a while until things are sorted out. The researchers found that the animals forgot the experience quickly: Neurogenesis caused rats to lose memories faster. To do that, they gave animals drugs that made their brains create new neurons, then tested their ability to remember a bit of training. ![]() Frankland and his lab collaborators wanted to find out how new neuron production in the brain-neurogenesis-affects memories already stored in the hippocampus. Paul Frankland, a researcher at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, knew that in order for a memory to be planted in our brains for good, it first needs to get stored in the hippocampus-which connects related simultaneous memories from different sensory regions of the brain, forming them into a single episode. As kids' brains develop and add connections, they lose more memories than they create-and at the same time, early memories tend to be partial and therefore more likely to erode. People have been aware of this sort of childhood amnesia at least since Sigmund Freud coined the phrase at the turn of the 20th century, but it's only recently that advanced imaging has been combined with long-term behavioral studies to allow scientists to start to really understand how childhood memory fundamentally differs from the adult version. "Something was happening at age 7," says Bauer. They found that the children remembered about 60 percent of the events during their second interview (when they were about 5) but much, much less in the third (when they were around 8)-a deterioration of memory greater than usual. Both times, they asked the kids to recall events they described as 3-year-olds. The researchers then brought back some of the children two years later and again six years later. That's backed up by research: In one major study, Emory University psychologist Patricia Bauer and a colleague invited a bunch of 3-year-olds into her lab and interviewed the children about events in the previous three months, like trips to the zoo or birthday parties. ![]() But ask him about the same trip when he's 7, and it's likely he won't remember a thing. Ask a 5-year-old about his visit to the aquarium a year prior, and there's a good chance he'll tell you all sorts of details: the color of the reef, what was in the touch tank. I ran the sound for a small house concert featuring the songwriter Vance Gilbert with a local musician opening. Heavy right hand technique brings that quack out the most, which ends up sounding thin. Re playing touch with piezo: back when I worked in an acoustic shop, I heard a lot of great players who could make a piezo system sound great, and a lot that made it sound very artificial and flat. I definitely wouldn't run the piezo signal through a traditional electric setup unless I was doing so for a funky effect. So I'm still processing the piezo signal like I would an acoustic w/pickup, but also want the more constrained sound of IRs in the electric chain so the electric sound doesn't sound bigger than the acoustic. Both paths then merge before they hit modulation, delays, reverb, and my looper, and go through the same output to a monitor, not a guitar amp or cabinet. The magnetic path starts with amp and cab sims, while the piezo has multiband compression, and parametric EQs and an acoustic IR running parallel to get a little less quack and more body (the mids in the 300-800hz are what needs the most work) to the sound. If that's the sound you want, that's fine, but again if I'm doing just acoustic I'd rather not have to address that battle on a different guitar.Īll that said, I'm prepping a gig this weekend using the PRS with two separate signal chains in my modeler (AxeFX). The second reason is that it really doesn't sound like an acoustic guitar, it sounds like a quacky/zingy piezo pickup in an acoustic guitar, which is something that a lot of acoustic player work very hard to eliminate using outboard gear and playing touch (more on that below). Fingerstyle and single note playing sound a little better. So if I'm playing something that is very strum-y on the PRS, it doesn't have the same percussive quality I would normally want. Probably the biggest is that the note envelope and decay is different and is not really tweakable acoustics have a much stronger attach and quicker decay than even hollowbodies. If I was doing a straight acoustic gig, I'd rather have my acoustic with pickup for a few different reasons. I have an older PRS Hollowbody Spruce (not SE) with the piezo system. For live loosing the mids is a big sacrifice. Again, sounded fine with me playing alone but got burried in the mix. Your mileage may vary.Įdit: after that I thought I still wanted that sound and got an acoustic simulator pedal. If it was just that one guitar and vocals that would have been fine but with drums and bass as well it just did not work. The thing with the piezo sound is that it is very scooped in the mids and becuase of that it gets lost on stage. That was in a band situation but nothing too rocking or loud. Using the piezo live just got me burried in the mix and I could not be heard at all while turning up to be heard was just too harsh and bright. It was cool at home but the first gig I tried it at I realized that I had just wasted a lot of time and money. It sounded great at home and for recording and I had a toggle switch put in so that I could choose piezo only, magnetic only or piezo and magnetic blended and blend with the knob. I bought a fishman piezo TOM bridge and the preamp and paid to have it installed on my Gibson the Paul. Several years back I got on a piezo kick and was convinced that I needed that sound. ![]() ![]() We hope to redefine the fun of a convention and be one of the most influential anime events in the world. ![]() Usually a vacuum is applied to a bagged repair to squeeze excess resin into a bleader cloth that leaves a repair without any noticeable bulge. Finally the amount of matrix or resin used to bind it together is also important to keep the strength and weight the same. CF of the same type and orientation I layered in a reverse pattern to match the sanded area. The repair should remove, by sanding, one layer at a time to note the weave direction and feather the edge. The best repairs are equal strength as the original part, not greater than or less than. I suppose that puts me in a position where I can't tell you how to fix it, but I can tell you why it's a bad idea. As soon as there is damage deeper than surface level cracks, it's better to send it off to a carbon professional.ĭisclaimer: I'm not a carbon fiber professional, but I am a mechanical engineering B.S. You could then remove the outer few layers and replace it with twill. I've seen the Predator kit floating around, but IMO the only suitable jobs for that kit are if you have some kind of a scrape that dug into the surface of the carbon fiber. If you leave the damaged carbon underneath and only patch over the surface, the damage underneath can propagate and end up damaging the otherwise intact carbon or even your repair. You need to remove all of the layers of damaged carbon and rebuild them, which, again, the kit probably won't give you enough carbon fabric to do. If the frame experienced large enough of an impact that the surface cracked, it's very likely that the layers underneath have also delaminated if not cracked as well. Carbon cracks are rarely just the surface or 1-2 layers of carbon. Not only will most amateurs not have enough skill to do so properly, but the kit itself may not even give you enough carbon fabric to create the wedge. A proper carbon repair is done by sanding away several layers of the carbon and stacking up the patch in sort of a thin "wedge" shape.Using twill to patch up a crack in unidirectional carbon isn't a great idea - at least half of the fibers in the fabric won't be aligned even if you intentionally align one of the fiber directions of the twill, and that means the resultant repair will be both weaker and thicker than the original layup. The carbon repair kit likely only comes with twill, whereas bike frames are almost always made from unidirectional with maybe a decorative twill layer on the outside. The typical advice for at-home carbon repairs is "no".
